In round one after the summit Trump targeted $50 billion in Chinese goods and China retaliated. Now Trump is reportedly targeting another $250 billion in Chinese goods.
How does 2020 related to all this? China is now targeting specific goods from the U.S. that are produced in states crucial for Trump to win in 2018 midterms and ultimately in 2020. States like Ohio for example.
There has never been and will never be a more intense trade war than we are witnessing and about to witness. Trump was a little taken back by China's attempts to steer North Korea into its corner rather than helping to focus on denuclearization. Also he understands that Xi Jin Ping of China has reneged on his promises to not militarize the South China Sea and that the communist party of china has much more in its sights than just the South China Sea and North Korea. It has its sights set on world domination including taking the island nation of Taiwan by force by 2020 which would then enable it to expand further into the Pacific much the same way that imperial Japan did in the lead up to WWII.
Trump understands what is at stake here regarding China, the communist party of china, its eternal leader Xi Jin Ping and world trade. The balance of trade must be brought into balance, China must stop forcing foreign companies to hand over trade secrets in return for market access and China must stop its vast economic espionage campaigns as well as rampant theft of intellectual property.
Along with all of this they must not be allowed to bully their way around the South China Sea or continue to target Taiwan. Trump is showing he can play hardball with the best of them and both sides appear prepared and determined to not hold anything back. Chinese officials have said they are prepared to "fight to the end" in this trade war. I predict they lose.
